Synergy Recycling, LLC was founded in 2000 to meet the growing need for environmentally responsible recycling of obsolete and end of life electronic equipment. Since then, we have grown rapidly, and in 2009 we moved our primary processing facility to our Madison, North Carolina. According to a Recycling Today survey in 2010, Synergy had become the 10th largest electronics recycling company in the United States.
In 2011 we completed installation of an advanced shredding and mechanical processing system that incorporates innovative, state of the art technology and produces very pure ferrous and non-ferrous metals and plastic commodities. The proprietary system was designed by MTD America, Ltd. and SGM Magnetics Corp. This system allows Synergy Recycling to separate your used electronic equipment into specific commodities to a degree that is unsurpassed in the world. Joe ClaytonDirector of Sales, has over 25 years experience in the environmental management field. He serves as Chair of the Electronics Division of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), the dominant trade organization for the scrap recycling industry, and is on ISRI’s Leadership Committee. Joe also serves on the Technical Advisory Committee of R2 Solutions, the organization that oversees the R2 certification program for electronics recyclers. Prior to joining Synergy in 2003, Joe served as Recycling Manager for Orange County, North Carolina. He has written numerous articles and book chapters on a variety of environmental topics, and has taught environmental policy analysis courses at West Virginia University. John BirkholzRegional Sales Manager, is a former School Administrator with the Chapel Hill Carrboro City School System, where he was a Principal of Chapel Hill High School. He also worked for the State of North Carolina Department of Historic Preservation as a Lighthouse Keeper at Currituck Beach Lighthouse. He has served on numerous boards of nonprofits in the Chapel Hill Community. He is also a licensed Building Contractor who builds environmentally friendly “green” structures in North Carolina. Megan BenhamSales Representative, brings a strong scientific background to Synergy, having graduated from Ball State University with a BS in Chemistry. Katie MaloneSales Representative, comes from a strong agricultural and business background. During her time at the Maggie Walker Governor’s School and University of Mary Washington she worked in medical research and food service. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 2008, she entered the retail arena and founded a feed department in an independent hardware store. Katie then became a Purina Feed Specialist and started monthly Farmers Markets, periodic Horse Owners’ Workshops and Planting Seminars as well as bi-yearly Chicken Swaps. She specializes in finding the perfect recycling solution for each customer as well as organizing 1-day recycling events. Steve EarpDirector of Compliance, practices law with Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, a leading Southeastern law firm. He brings to Synergy more than 30 years’ experience in environmental and OSHA matters. Steve is very active in the environmental community, having served as President of NC Beautiful, the oldest environmental organization in North Carolina, and currently serving as Treasurer of the Piedmont Land Conservancy, which focuses on preservation of open space, natural resources and farmland.
